AbstractThe Indian medicine especially the Siddha system of Medicine is one of the ancient systems of medicine which exists for more than twelve thousand years. The Siddha system describes the medicine as one which cures disease, protects the mind, prevents the body from disease and which prolongs the longevity of life. Costus (Saussurea lappa) belongs to the Compositae family. In Siddha medicine, it is known as Kostum. In Siddha system of medicine it is said that it can be used for ailments of eyes, stomach, neck, jaws, tongue, mouth and also be used for fever, edema, wheezing (dyspnoea), haemorrhoids and spermaturia. Biochemical studies show that it contains starch, reducing sugar, amino acids, chloride and potassium. Pharmacological evaluation shows that the costus root has significant smooth muscle relaxant effect on isolated guinea pig ileum. In addition, the test drug has significant diuretic effect and mild chronic anti-inflammatory effect.
