Abstract

The role of closed inter-costal drainage has been studied in 162 cases of tubercular empyema thoracis with broncho-pleural fistula. Satisfactory results were obtained in 79.6% cases. The average duration of hospitalization was 49 days. Ten cases developed residual fibrothorax in whom the I.C.D. had to be continued for more than 8 weeks. Major surgical intervention, if possible, should be resorted to if 8-10 weeks’ drainage is not successful.
