Abstract

Out of 50 selected cases of tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis diagnosed on the basis of clinical features but not responding to standard antitubercular drugs for 1 year or deteriorating after 3-6 months’ treatment, 6 cases were culture positive for acid fast bacilli and of these 1 was due to M. tuberculosis and 5 were due to atypical mycobacteria (scotochromogens, Runyon Gr. II). Histopathological examination was suggestive of atypical mycobacteria in 4, Mycobacterium tuberculosis in 27, Hodgkin’s disease in 3, metastatic adenocarcinoma in 1 and non-specific lymphadenitis in the remaining 5.
