A study of 40 cases of tuberculous empyema managed with chemotherapy and closed intercostal drainage is presented. The lung expanded in 25 cases. Eight cases expired, 3 of these within a few days of admission. Five cases needed surgical intervention. Factors adversely affecting the out-come of therapy were the presence of bronchopleura 1 fistula, chronicity of the lesion and presence of disease in the underlying and/or contralateral lung.
