Abstract

Drug development is a continuous process in the Modern world and discovering and bringing one new drug to the market almost costs a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company nearly $900 million and takes an average of 10 to 12 years. On the contrary the Siddha and Ayurveda systems of medicine have plenty of time-tested formulations that need to be scientifically evaluated. According to the ICMR guidelines (Indian Council for Medical Research), ASU (Ayurveda, Siddha & Unani) drugs having literary evidence are exempted from Phase I and Phase II clinical studies which makes Drug Development even more easier. In that way the authors of this paper have selected two Herbo-mineral Siddha drugs (having references in age old literatures), ‘Thalaga parpam’ and ‘Thurusu chendooram’ for further studies initially with preliminary anti-microbial screening.
