Abstract

Broncho Alveblar Lavage (BAL) was done in 25 established cases of Bronchial Asthma with the help of flexible fibroptic bronchoscope. Differential cell counts were carried out by means of "microscope glass cover technique" and total cell counts were done in a hemocytometer. A cytological profile of the various cells collected in BAL was prepared. Although no distinctive cellular profile diagnostic of Bronchial Asthma was noted yet eosinophils were present in a higher percentage in BAL fluid compared with blood smears, specially in patients with allergic manifestations (atopic). Asthmatics, having a high eosinophil count in BAL did not respond to conventional broncho-dilators but showed good symptomatic response to corticosteroids.
