Abstract

A cooperative trial is reported in which INH and Thiacetazone were used in the continuation phase (6 months) of short course chemotherapy after an initial intensive phase of 2 months’ treatment with either 4 drugs (SHRZ** or EHRZ) or 3 drugs (HRZ). It was found that among initially drug sensitive patients, both immediate and long term results were satisfactory if initial treatment was with 4 drugs (2SHRZ/6TH, 2EHRZ/6TH) but not satisfactory if it was with 3 drugs (2HRZ/6TH). In the latter case, prolongation of the continuation phase by 2 months (2HRZ/8TH) did not lead to better results. Treatment results with 2SHRZ/6TH and 2EHRZ/6TH among initially drug resistant cases were not unsatisfactory but inferior to those among initially drug sensitive cases. It is concluded that if it is proposed to use TH in the continuation phase of short course chemotherapy, initial intensive treatment should be with 4 and not 3 drugs.
