Abstract

Hernia of the lung or pneumonocele is a protrusion of the pleura covered lung beyond the normal confines of the thoracic cavity through an abnormal opening in the chest wall. A study of the literature indicates that some cases of traumatic evisceration or prolapse have also been included in the hernia. Prolapse, however, differs from the true hernia because the lung tissue which protrudes beyond the normal confines of the chest cavity is not contained in a distinct layer of parietal pleura.
